Connectivity
Many new TVs come with Smart features that let them connect to the internet and offer a variety of apps for streaming video from services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video and others. They can also interface well with other connected devices such as the best smart speakers (like Alexa and Google Assistant) and gaming consoles. Some come with built-in voice-interaction tools that allow you to switch channels and search for programs using your voice.
A TV with built-in WiFi allows you to connect directly to your home wireless network, eliminating the need for a separate device such as a Roku or Chromecast. This is typically the cheapest way to get into Smart TV functionality, but be aware that if your home wireless network is too busy you may experience performance issues or even lose your connection.
Most TVs with Smart features require a high-speed internet connection to access content from online services, and some will have a subscription cost. You will need to check with your internet provider for details on what plans are available. You will also want to consider upgrading your data limit if you expect to stream a lot of video content on your TV, and you should plan ahead for the additional cost involved.
You can also use a smart TV with a traditional wired internet connection. This method requires an ethernet cable running from your router to your TV, and it will not be as fast or stable as a Wi-Fi connection.
Most Smart TVs can receive OTT and Connected TV devices that plug into the HDMI port, such as the latest generation of Roku and Fire TV Stick. These devices can provide access to a variety of OTT and Connected TV content, as well as allow you to browse the web, check your email or manage other devices on your home network. Some of these devices can even act as a remote control for your connected home devices, including your Nest or Ring camera and your robot vacuum cleaner. They can’t do everything that a Smart TV can do, however, and you will still need to use the television’s keyboard or buttons, or your voice to navigate a website—which is not an ideal experience on a large screen.
Streaming
TV streaming services give you access to a huge selection of shows and movies online for a monthly fee. This is different from downloading programs to watch, which usually requires a fast internet connection. Instead, your device connects to the server that hosts the video, which streams it over the internet.
There are two main types of streaming: live and on-demand. Live streaming is similar to a cable subscription and airs live shows on a set schedule, while on-demand streaming is akin to having a DVR and lets you watch the programs you want when you want them. Some streaming services offer both options, and most also have original programming.
The most popular way to stream is through smart TVs, which are often sold with apps already loaded. Other ways to stream include gaming consoles, connected media players and PCs. These devices can usually connect wirelessly through your home Wi-Fi, but some have HDMI ports and can be wired directly to your router for a stronger signal.
Getting started with streaming usually involves finding a compatible TV, computer or streaming device and creating an account. Popular streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and YouTube are available on many devices, but if you have a favorite service that doesn’t come preloaded on your device, you can download the app from the provider’s website or store.
A solid internet connection is also required to get started with streaming, and it’s recommended you have at least 2 Mbps (megabits per second) for standard definition videos and 5 Mbps for HD video or higher. If you’re having trouble with streaming, try restarting your router, moving closer to your Wi-Fi source or using a wired connection for more stable streaming.
Unlike downloading files, streaming videos play immediately, so you don’t have to wait seconds or minutes for the program to load. This immediate satisfaction is a great fit for our low tolerance levels for waiting for media, and it also helps explain why more people are turning to streaming as a way to replace traditional cable or satellite subscriptions.
